2009 Event Information

Duffle bags will be given to each Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K participant at the Red Lion Hotel during the Race Packet Pickup from Noon to 8 PM Friday, September 4. Packet pick up will be in the Teton Room. Your duffle bag will include your bib, timing chip, 2009 Race Information Packet, and other goodies. The 2009 Race Information Packet will include start times, what to do with your stuff at the start line, bus transportation schedule, directions, maps, and etc.

PLEASE NOTE: Anyone not picking up their race packet at the Red Lion Hotel on Friday, September 4, 2009 will not be guaranteed a duffle bag. LATE Registrations (August 3 thru September 4) are not guaranteed a 2009 duffle bag, an alternate bag (e.g., left over 2008 duffle bags) may be provided to those registering late.

All events close at 12:45 pm. Marathon participants MUST maintain a pace under 14 minutes 53 seconds per mile. Half Marathon participants MUST maintain a pace under 20 minutes 36 seconds per mile. 10K participants MUST maintain a pace under 36 minutes 17 seconds per mile. 5K participants MUST maintain a pace under 67 minutes 44 seconds per mile. Transportation is REQUIRED to any participant unable to maintain their respective pace throughout the entire course. Chip timing will be used for marathon, half marathon, 10K, and 5K events - ABSOLUTELY NO EARLY STARTS!!

Proceeds from 1.5 mile MaraFUN and For Kids “2” directly benefit the Girls on the Run – SE Idaho District Health Department.

Details for the 1.5 mile MaraFUN:

  • 1.5 mile MaraFUN registration open only to those 18 years old and younger.
  • Start area will be north end of Lower Ross Park (near the swing sets across the street from the skate park, S 2nd Avenue).
  • 1.5 mile MaraFUN will start at 10:45 am.
  • Each participant receives a short sleeve cotton 2009 Idaho State Journal Pocatello Marathon - Running the Gap shirt.
  • All finishers will receive a 2009 Idaho State Journal Pocatello Marathon - Running the Gap finisher medal.
  • Note: 1.5 mile MaraFUN is a timed event (will not be chip timed) and additional awards will be presented. Details of the age groups will be based on the number of participants, which details may not be available until the day of the event.

Details for the For Kids "2" (0.2 miles):

  • For Kids "2" (0.2 miles) registration open only to those 8 years old and younger.
  • Start area will be north end of Lower Ross Park (near the swing sets across the street from the skate park, S 2nd Avenue).
  • For Kids "2" will start at 10:30 am with wave starts approximately every 5 minutes as follows (depending on the number of participants and their age); 8 and 7 year olds, 6 and 5 year olds, 4 and under.
  • Each participant receives a short sleeve cotton 2009 Idaho State Journal Pocatello Marathon - Running the Gap shirt.
  • All finishers will receive a 2009 Idaho State Journal Pocatello Marathon - Running the Gap finisher medal.
  • Note: For Kids "2" (0.2 miles) IS NOT a timed event and additional awards (i.e., overall, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place) WILL NOT be awarded.

Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K Participant Details:

  1. Each particpant must pickup their race packet at the Red Lion Hotel during the Race Packet Pickup from Noon to 8 PM Friday, September 4. Packet pick up will be in the Teton Room. Anyone not picking up their race packet at the Red Lion Hotel on Friday, September 4, 2009 will not be guaranteed a duffle bag.

  2. Each participant picking up their race packet MUST present their confirmation email or valid ID.

  3. Entry fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. However, anyone who registers but is unable to participate may pick up their duffle bag and shirt at the Packet Pick Up (please make sure to not take a timing chip). Anyone not able to participate and that does not pick up their race packet may have their duffle bag and shirt mailed to them for a $10 shipping and handling fee.

  4. Any registered participant wanting to change events may change by paying a $5.00 processing fee plus the difference in registration fee if the change is to a longer distance (i.e., half marathon to marathon would be $5 + $10 = $15 total). See the REGISTER link and the mail in registration form for the difference in event registration fees. To change events; send an email to pocatellorun@aol.com requesting the change, mail a (difference in registration fee $ + processing fee of $5) check payable to Pocatello Marathon, c/o Mike Calley, 1410 Kelsea Pl, Pocatello, ID 83201.

  5. Each person who registers will receive a 2009 Idaho State Journal Pocatello Marathon - Running the Gap shirt. Marathon participants will receive long sleeved microfiber T-shirt. Half marathon, 10K, and 5K participants will receive short sleeved microfiber T-shirt. Females will receive a feminine cut micro-fiber shirt unless they indicate a unisex sized shirt during the registration process. Anyone that does not pick up their race packet will be responsible for shipping and handling fee to receive their shirt.

  6. Each person who registers will receive a 2009 Idaho State Journal Pocatello Marathon - Running the Gap duffle bag. LATE Registrations (August 3 thru September 4) are not guaranteed a 2009 duffle bag, an alternate bag (e.g., a 2008 duffle bag) may be provided to those registering late.

  7. All finishers will receive a 2009 Idaho State Journal Pocatello Marathon - Running the Gap finisher medal.

  8. Course is USA T&F certified (Certification Number: ID08002DCR). Times on this course can be used to qualify for the Boston and New York Marathons.

  9. Transportation will be provided to the starting line. Duffle bags will be provided at the Race Packet Pickup to each person who registers. These duffle bags will be marked with your bib number and name. Use these duffle bags to place extra clothes that you are wearing to the start or want at the finish line. We will collect the bags just prior to the start of each event, transport them to the finish line area, sort the bags, and deliver them to you after you cross the finish line. There is no parking at the starting areas so use the provided transportation. Bus Schedule - Saturday, September 5, 2009

PLEASE NOTE: Due to road closures & detours, you must ride the buses to the respective start lines. Please be aware of departure times - buses will leave promptly. The Marathon is the ONLY event for which transportation will be provided from two locations. ALL OTHER EVENTS (Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K) will load/depart from only one location - at the Ross Park Aquatic Complex. A shuttle bus has been added for half marathon, 10K, and 5K participants needing transportation from the Red Lion to Ross Park. See below for details.

Buses will leave PROMPTLY at the times indicated - so be on the bus early.

Marathon (6:15 am start) - Buses will start to load at 5:00 am. Once a bus is full, that bus will depart. The first bus will depart at 5:10 am. The last bus will depart promptly at 5:30 am for Buckskin Saddle - Marathon start line on Crestview Road.

  • Two options for marathon (and marathon ONLY) pick up:
  • Location #1 - Load buses outside our host hotel - The Red Lion Hotel, 1555 Pocatello Creek Road
  • Location #2 - Load buses at Lower Ross Park finish line area - Ross Park Aquatic Complex, 2901 S 2nd Avenue

Shuttle service from the Red Lion Hotel to Ross Park Aquatic Complex – One pickup only – Buses will start to load at 6:00 am for anyone needing transportation to Ross Park. Buses will leave PROMPTLY at 6:30 am. Anyone riding these buses from the Red Lion to Ross Park must exit at Ross park and then board their appropriate bus (i.e., this shuttle bus may not be going to the start line you need).

Half Marathon (8:00 am start) - Buses will start to load at 7:00 am. Once a bus is full, that bus will depart. The last bus will depart promptly at 7:20 am for the Half Marathon start line on N Inkom Road near E Green Canyon Road.

  • ONLY one option for half marathon pick up:
  • Load buses at Lower Ross Park finish line area - Ross Park Aquatic Complex, 2901 S 2nd Avenue

10K (8:45 am start) - Buses will start to load at 8:00 am. All buses depart promptly at 8:15 am for 10K start line on W Old Highway 91 near N Blackrock Canyon Road.

  • ONLY one option for half marathon pick up:
  • Load buses at Lower Ross Park finish line area - Ross Park Aquatic Complex, 2901 S 2nd Avenue

5K (9:00 am start) - Buses will start to load at 8:15 am. All buses depart promptly at 8:30 am for 5K start line on S 5th Avenue near Bannock County Sheriff Department 5800 S 5th Ave and W Darby Road.

  • ONLY one option for half marathon pick up:
  • Load buses at Lower Ross Park finish line area - Ross Park Aquatic Complex, 2901 S 2nd Avenue

PLEASE NOTE: We encourage all participants to stay in the finish line area to enjoy all the activities of Journalfest, the other races, a free shower at Ross park Aquatic Complex, a massage, and the award ceremony. However if you need to return to the Red Lion Hotel before the award ceremony is complete, transportation from Ross Park Aquatic Complex, 2901 S 2nd Avenue to The Red Lion Hotel, 1555 Pocatello Creek Road, will be as indicated below with at least two buses staying until the awards presentation is complete: Award presentation starts at 11:30 am and will be completed by approximately 1:00 pm)

  • Bus#1: 11:45 am
  • Bus#2: 12:00 pm
  • Bus#3: 12:15 pm
  • Bus#4: 12:30 pm
  • Bus#5: 12:45 pm
  • Bus#6 and Bus#7: Following Award Presentation – approximately 1:00 pm
  1. Aid stations will be located approximately at mile marks 2.6, 5.3, 8, 9.8, 12.1, 14, 15.7, 18, 19.1, 20.1, 21.1, 21.8, 23, 24, and 25. Each aid station will have water, PowerAde (one of two flavors at an individual aid station - either Fruit Punch or Mountain Blast), vaseline, ibuprofen, and band aids. PowerBar energy gel will be available at the Mile 11.9, Mile 20.1, and Mile 23 aid stations (GU energy gel may also be available). Bananas and oranges will also be available at Mile 5.3, 15.7, 19.1, 21.8, and 24 aid stations. A porta-pottie will also be located at each aid station.

  2. AWARDS for Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K events: 1st place Overall Men and Women Awards, 1st place Masters Men and Women Awards, and 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place Age Group Awards will be presented. Overall and Masters winners will NOT be included in their age group awards. Award presentation will begin at 11:30 am. Awards will not be released prior to the awards presentation. Award recipients not able to stay for the awards presentation must make delivery arrangements at the Awards table in the finish area. A $10 shipping and handling fee will be charged for all awards that need to be delivered. The age groups for men and women include: 14 & under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70 and over.

  3. The Ross Park Aquatic Complex locker rooms and showers will be open at 9:30 am and will be available for race participants to take a shower following their event. Last access to the locker rooms and showers will be at 10:45 am. Anyone using the showers MUST be out by 11:00 am. The 11:00 am closing time will be enforced so as to not interrupt the Ross Park Aquatic Complex daily opening.

  4. $3.00 Ross Park Aquatic Complex discount pool passes are available during registration process, at the race packet pick up on Friday, September 4, and near the awards table in the finish line area on Saturday, September 5. The Ross Park Aquatic Complex will be open at noon and each pass is valid either Saturday, September 5, or Sunday, September 6. NO Refunds or Rainchecks.

  5. Food and beverage will be provided at the finish area for race participants. Additional food and beverage vendors will also be at the JournalFest at the finish area. JournalFest includes free kids' activities and more.

  6. Race Packet Pickup will be Friday, September 4, 2009 from NOON to 8:00 pm at the Red Lion Hotel.

    -- Marathon participants unable to be at the race packet pickup on Friday may pick up their bib and chip at the start area of the marathon.

    -- Half marathon, 10K, and 5K participants unable to be at the race packet pickup on Friday may pick up their bib and chip starting approximately 30 minutes prior to loading their bus for transportation to their respective start areas.

    -- You may have a friend pick up your race packet and timing chip, BUT they MUST have a copy of your confirmation email. Make sure the assigned bib and chip to not get mixed up.

    NOTE: Duffle bags will not be guaranteed for anyone not picking up their race packet at the Red Lion Hotel on Friday, September 4, 2009.


  7. NO RACE DAY REGISTRATIONS OR CHANGES - VERIFY Name, Age, and Event by clicking the REGISTER link and then checking the "Who is Registered? Are You?" link for the respective event. Online registration closes Tuesday, September 1. This list will be updated one final time on Wednesday, September 2. Email any changes to PocatelloRun@aol.com prior to Midnight on Saturday, August 29 or be at the packet pickup at the Red Lion Hotel on Friday, September 4.

  1. Pasta Bar Friday, September 4, 2009 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at Red Lion in the Caribou Room for race participants, family, and friends. Pasta dinner will be $12 per person. Pre-registration for Pasta Bar recommended. Pre-registration available during online registration or on the mail in registration form.


  2. The Red Lion will be offering a group reservation special for all participants for Friday, September 4 through Sunday, September 6. The rate for participants is $74.95 plus state and local taxes. A late check of 4:00 pm is available and must be arranged with the hotel prior to or at check in. A limited number of rooms are available at these rates, and reservations for these rooms at these rates must be made by August 15. Participants can make their reservations by one of the two following methods;

(1) call 208-233-2200 by August 15 and identify themselves as a Pocatello Marathon participant
